This client work has also helped us to understand the many reasons why strategic planning often falls short of expectations: 

  • There was a lack of clarity from senior leaders on what success looks like over a defined period and poor alignment functionally on what winning looks like
  • They were not selecting objectively quantifiable goals to track progress continually; not addressing gaps early in the year while there is still time to fix them
  • There was a failure to make clear strategic choices, what we call “straddling” – spreading yourself way too thin geographically or via the definition of your target customers
